What Can CBD Do For Your Dog?

Providing CBD as a part of a regular regimen for your dog is becoming more and more popular.

And, it turns out, Veterinarians are actually beginning to recommend this treatment even though it hasn’t been approved by the FDA.

This is in spite of Veterinarians being reluctant to talk about CBD as recent as 2018.

In this 2018 study, it found that the majority of Vets reported to never initiate CBD discussions (1,398, 65.7%), followed by rarely (413, 19.4%), weekly (140, 6.6%), monthly (132, 6.2%), and daily (45, 2.1%).

But, things are changing…

Even without FDA approval, some states aren’t waiting.  States like California are passing laws allowing Veterinarians to talk to owners about possible CBD benefits.

Not So Fast…

Before you read anything about possibly purchasing CBD for dogs, make sure CBD products are legal in your state.

As of 2022, these states still make CBD products illegal:

• Idaho
• South Dakota
• Nebraska

In addition, these other state only allow CBD with restrictions:

• Wyoming
• Iowa
• Wisconsin
• Kansas
• Texas
• Indiana
• Kentucky
• Mississippi
• Tennessee
• Virginia
• North Carolina
• Alabama
• Georgia
• South Carolina

The Farm Bill of 2018 legalized hemp, or any part of the cannabis plant with a THC concentration below 0.3% in 2018.

For states that restrict CBD, that typically means that if tested, that the THC content much test below some threshold (specified by state).

BIG WARNING!!!

In some of these states, the criminal aspect of having a product that contains too much TCH in that CBD product can have severe consequences.

In Texas, it is currently a felony to have CBD Oil in you possession that contains trace amount of THC.

CBD products in Texas containing more than 0.3% of THC fall under Penalty Group 2.

The penalty for violation of this law is up to a $10,000 fine and 180 days to two years in prison and is a state jail felony!

So, What Are The CBD For Dogs Benefits?

Many are finding that your fuzzy friend can use CBD to:

CBD For Dog Pain

The use of CBD has gained popularity as a potential remedy for dog pain.

CBD is derived from hemp plants.  And, is believed to possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that may help alleviate discomfort in dogs.

Many pet owners have reported positive results when using CBD products for their furry companions.  Some have noticed benefits like improved mobility, reduced pain, and overall enhanced well-being.

However, it is essential to consult with a veterinarian before introducing CBD to a dog’s pain management regimen to ensure that it is used in a safe manner.

What Risks Are There For Giving CBD To Your Dog?

Can My Pooch Become Addicted?

CBD for dogs products can sometimes have trace elements of THC (the ingredient in cannabis that makes you “high”).

Research has found that marijuana use is addictive for about 10% of humans.

Bottom line?

Science finds that trace amounts of THC in CBD are not addictive for humans.  This makes it vary unlikely for animals as well.

One of the problems with CBD is that it is sometimes consumed using edibles.

A serious problem with edibles in humans is that hunger and the consumption of something included in the edible doesn’t necessarily line up.

Why is this important?

Well, the unfortunate result of this is that too often edibles that are infused with CBD or Hemp are stronger than expected.  In other words, they can have more THC than expected.

This too often results in a delicious edible being consumed in much larger quantities than is recommended for the product.

What might happen with too much THC?

Here is the list of scary side effects that you really don’t want to see (be sure to follow these links for more info):

• THC toxicity
• A drop in liver enzyme production
• Tremors
• Inhibit metabolism of other drugs

Hemp or a hemp based CBD product can sometimes contain up to 0.3% THC.  Consuming too much of an edible like this can cause mild THC toxicity.

This is also a potentially bigger issue with products when they aren’t regulated.

So, it’s the THC in any CBD product that’s the issue.  Not the actual CBD part.

The good news is that your dog has to consume an extremely large amount of a poorly regulated CBD edible for the symptoms to become an issue.

However, Dakota has been know to steal a bag of something delicious from our kitchen counters.  And, when she has done this, she consumes the entire bag.

SO BEWARE!!!

WebMD indicates that the active ingredient in this product, Diphenhydramine HCl, is safe for animals.

The benefits of generic Benadryl are:

• Easy to swallow tablet
• Helps reduce and relieve congestion
• The antihistamine effect causes sleepiness (which can reduce anxiety)
• More restful sleep
